Soil Strategic Role in Global Food Production and CO2 emissions mitigation

The soil, a very complex porous media, is the third bigger carbon reservoir of Planet, above of the atmosphere and biota pools sizes together, and with around less than half of Geologic pool, which is largely associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and climate change impacts. Besides to be an important carbon reservoir soil is pivotal to global agricultural sector that is one of few economic sectors that can work to reduce their own GHG emissions, using more sustainable practices, and simultaneously contribute to carbon sequestration, incorporated as a natural increase of soil organic matter content. So, in recent years soil has received a massive scientific effort to face adaptation and mitigation to global climate change challenges. In this presentation will be described a short overview of recent soil carbon scientific findings and combined with our research data of soil carbon sequestration from long term field experiments and large farms operations, and that includes innovative high and low field nuclear magnetic resonance results, demonstrating interesting achievements to conciliate agriculture and GHG emissions mitigation.
